Part 11: Building your Network

This activity is to help you build a network of supportive people. These may be people who have been helpful in the past, and those you might want to connect with now or in the future. Friendships and supports can change during caregiving. It may be time to identify some new supports, or reach out to family and friends in a different way. It is very important to find someone to talk to, someone who understands you and your role as a caregiver.

Guide:

A) Past and/or current networks: Make a list of those people who have helped you in some way. You may want to think about:

  • family and friends
  • health care providers
  • community agencies or services
  • faith-based groups
  • other important connections

B) Adding to your network: Is there a person or a group of people who are missing? Who would you like to add to your network? Make a list of their names and contact information (you can take a look at the resources section for some ideas).

  • Try contacting someone in your network on a regular basis (for example, once a month). You may need to tell family and friends how they can support you.
  • “If you wish to connect with other care partners online, please head to our new online discussion space DementiaTalk Canada to join the conversation!”
